Bucharest: The Romanian Ministry of Defence reported on Tuesday that potential drone debris was located in the southeastern border area following overnight Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports along the Danube River.
Romanian radar systems detected multiple drones approaching the airspace of the NATO member shortly after midnight, leading the ministry to alert residents in the southeastern region.
Due to adverse weather conditions, fighter jets could not be dispatched, but military personnel successfully retrieved possible drone fragments approximately 5 kilometers (3 miles) within Romania's border with Ukraine.
In recent months, incursions into Romania's airspace by drones have become more common as Russia continues its offensive against Ukrainian ports near the border. Officials noted that the samples collected from the drone debris closely resemble those utilized by the Russian military.
In response to a series of drone incursions that have highlighted vulnerabilities within NATO airspace, Romania and Poland are now implementing a new defense system to counter Russian drone threats.
